Legal way to recruit high school athletes

If you need the "certain player" to help you win, simply contact the right person and select a foreign exchange student that can play. It's perfectly legal. The VHSL as well as other state high school athletic governing bodies, allows foreign exchange students one year of high school eligibility. Most agree the real purpose of this ruling isn't to win but to allow foreign students educational and cultural opportunities in America. Those responsible for educational opportunities know the cultural implications of foreign exchange students and impact on local school students. Surely, this is a positive.

However, this isn't the real reason most foreign exchange students are here. Obviously, if a foreign exchange student and his/her host family, show up at school to enroll, then someone made a decision to provide an educational experience, both culturally and educationally. The opposite side of this is a foreign exchange student shows up because someone actually found an avenue to recruit "the missing link" for their team.

Again, if schools choose to recruit "the missing link" it is legal. Apparently, those who choose to recruit foreign exchange students forget that some local kid has to sit the bench while the recruit plays. With the talk of consolidation and considering those against consolidation, debate the fact of local kids having less chance to play. Obviously, they don't realize the impact the foreign exchange student has on local kids playing time and have decided to talk out of "both sides of their mouths."

Around Region D, we know the schools that consistently recruit foreign exchange students and their impact on district and regional championships. I wonder how many local kids on those championship teams with foreign exchange students look back and say, "What role did I play in this championship?" Also, could my team have won without the recruit?"

A simple way of looking at this is from the kid's angle. Kids begin playing in little league and hope to be athletic enough to play at the next level. Those having the skills get to demonstrate them on the junior varsity level and with continued improvement, become part of the varsity team. Then coach and others recruit a foreign exchange student to be part of my team. Soon thereafter, the team begins to wonder, who sits while the foreign exchange kid plays???????????????????????????

here's an idea...and totally thinking out of the box here...how about the local kids get off their butt and work harder so their spot doesn't get taken

if you got kids worried about PT more than they are about winning then you have no business playing the game anyway

the mentality of "let's let everyone get equal playing time" needs to go out the window as soon as you hit 8th grade...it makes for soft kids and even softer basketball players

man up...work harder

I played the #1 seed on my tennis team until my senior year when a German foreign exchange student took my spot...I worked as hard as I could to be the best #2 that I could be...and guess what, I got a state title because of the kid that I certainly would not have had otherwise

colleges recruit over kids all the time...if you're not getting the job done don't be surprised if the coach goes out and finds someone who can...if you're in the business world and you don't get the job done...guess what? they go find someone who can! stop stroking the psyche of these kids...push them to make them better, and don't let them get complacent

...and the best way to do that is to play with people who are simply better than you

Good point, but why worry about 1 or 2 kids when two years from now we are going to cut 11/11 offense and defense starters from the school's football teams ,27 total baseball players and the 15 basketball slots? I'd rather have the extra expense and the extra kids having something to do. (Yes, I do know about the other sports and programs, but since these 3 are probably the ones with the most interest and it is just sports and not classes, I didn't feel like going thru all the numbers.) I guess without all the funding, some of the new programs won't a chance.
